Spherical roller thrust bearings consists of two rings and asymmetrical rollers of spherical shape. They can accommodate combined radial and axial loads and also accommodate misalignment of the shafts. They are often used together with radial spherical roller bearings. Fluid bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a thin layer of pressurized liquid, these give low drag. Magnetic bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a magnetic field. This is used where very high speeds or very low drag is needed, for example the Zippe-type centrifuge. They are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. Thrust bearings are used in cars because the forward gears in modern car gearboxes use helical gears which, while aiding in smoothness and noise reduction, cause axial forces that need to be dealt with. The double helical or herringbone gear balances the thrust caused by normal helical gears. One specific thrust bearing in an automobile is the clutch "throw out" bearing, sometimes called the clutch release bearing.

Sealed bearings. A selection of SKF spherical roller bearings is also produced in a sealed version with contact seals on both sides. The seals are reinforced with sheet steel and made of an oil and wear-resistant: acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), designation suffix 2CS; hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR), designation suffix 2CS5; fluoro rubber (FKM), designation suffix 2CS2. The seals are inserted in recesses in the outer ring. For smaller bearing sizes, the seals are pressed into the recesses while the seals for the larger sizes are held in position by means of retaining rings (fig). The seals have two sealing lips contacting the lead-in at the sides of the inner ring raceway, to provide efficient sealing. Sealed bearings are lubricated as standard with an extreme pressure bearing grease according to table 1. They should not be heated to temperatures above 80°C during mounting, and should not be washed. Sealed bearings do not need to be relubricated when the operating temperature does not exceed 70°C and the rotational speed is below 50% of the limiting speed listed in the product table.
